25-28 July 2024

INABBY and KPBA (Kelompok Pencinta Bacaan)/SACL (Society for the Advancement for Children’s Literature) were invited to the Balige Writers Festival, a festival for writers, readers, and the community. The festival was held in Balige, the capital city of Toba, North Sumatra and aims to encourage a reading of Toba and its surroundings. The participants are invited to delve into literature and history, local wisdom, and initiatives of intellectuals from different eras about the area of Toba and Indonesia.

Dr Murti Bunanta, President of INABBY and the founder of KPBA/SACL represents INABBY/KPBA as one of the speakers who teach elementary teachers how to write for children and promote local wisdom through folktales, assisted by Valentina Kris, an illustrator member of KPBA.

One of the projects discussed consisted of curating, translating, and publishing Swedish children’s books in Indonesia, for young Indonesian readers. The project may involve the Indonesian government and the distribution of books to schools.

INABBY programs for IBBY Yamada Project As part of INABBY programs for the IBBY-Yamada Project, inclusivity, INABBY collaborates with Tab Space, a supported studio for artists with special needs, based in Bandung, West Java. The project explores neurodivergent artists’ responses towards Dr. Murti Bunanta’s children’s books.

During INABBY’s visit to Tab Space’s studio, artists listened to storytelling by Dr. Murti and produced drawings. Most of the artists have proven to be receptive to the story and created artworks in relevance to the story.

INABBY programs will continue with several other institutions in Jakarta and Bali. The neurodivergent artists are engaged and highly responsive to the stories written and read by Dr Murti Bunanta.
