The IBBY Yamada Workshop in Indonesia in 2014 has been done with the cooperation of Murti Bunanta Foundation in February 16th-26th 2014. Three trainers: Margaret Read MacDonald (USA), Murti Bunanta (President of SACL and INABBY) and Tetty Pratiwi (volunteer of SACL) have visited three villages in three islands.
In Bali Islands the workshop was done in Pakisan village for 40 elementary teachers from 20 schools. In this place our host was Yayasan Anak (Child Foundation), a non profit institution supported by a European NGO (France, Switzerland, Spain, etc.). This workshop was also attend by three friends from Spain (2) and France (1) who were coincidently paid a visit to the Child Foundation in Bali and were enthusiastically following the whole workshop. Since 2012 this organization has collaborated with SACL for operating a motorbike library in this village donated by Rotary Club-Jakarta and Murti Bunanta Foundation.
On the second day in Bali Island in Amed village we also had the chance to do a two hours storytelling session for more than 50 children. This was a good opportunity for the children to listen to good stories from Indonesia, India, Siberia, Puerto Rico, and many more.
The host of the workshop in Jogya (Central Java) was Karina Foundation which has a long partnership with IBBY and SACL. This organization has operated a motorbike library sponsored by IBBY in 2005 when this town had suffered from earthquake. We had the chance to visit the motorbike library that is still running well. The workshop was done in the village of Gayamharjo that lies in a hill and we had to walk to reach the house of one of the Karina’s volunteers which used as the venue of the training. The workshop was opened by the village Head who was very enthusiastic to receive us and also followed the morning session with great interest. The training was given to 40 caretakers of study group around the village. Sister Huberta is an activist for reading campaign since 2005 whom I know her since the handover of IBBY Motorbike library. This Catholic organization serves all communities with different religion and background. The workshop in Jogya was our last visit where we conducted three kinds of trainings: storytelling (Margaret), how to use books effectively and connect to school curriculum (Murti) and how to make simple storytelling devices (Tetty Pratiwi). It is to note that were happy to know that the driver of the Karina IBBY Motorbike Library was among the participants and seemed he likes telling story to children readers when he visited them every week.
Prior Jogya we visited Lombok Island and conducted the workshop in the village of Banyumulek with a new host we know recently but very active: “Nurul Wathon Circle”. In this place we trained 40 pre-school teachers from 20 pre-schools for 2 days. Besides the training we also donated books for all the pre-school and also in Jogya books were donated to the study groups. We are fortunate that several companies are our supporter for book donations. We have already received feedbacks from the villages we visited that our workshops helped them to be better in teaching and the teachers have a better knowledge and skills in their profession.
The IBBY Yamada Workshop 2014 in Indonesia in cooperation with Murti Bunanta Foundation will be continued in two other islands in April-May in Flores and West Timor Island. The trainers will be Murti Bunanta (President of SACL and INABBY) and Dina Tuasuun (head secretariat of INABBY)
